How to give your cat a pill
Cats do not always understand when you are trying to do something for their own benefit. They don’t like to have baths, they don’t like to go to the vet, and they don’t like having to take pills.
It can be very difficult to get a cat to take a pill but there are steps you can take to make it as easy as possible on both of you.
Get a friend to help you
Ideally, you should get someone to help you give a cat a pill. It will make your job a lot easier if someone can restrain the cat for you.
Wrap in a towel
Wrap the cat in a towel so that his claws cannot scratch you. Wrap the towel around the cat’s neck and swaddle him like a baby; just tightly enough that he can’t move but not too tight that he can’t breathe.
Open the cat’s mouth
While your friend holds the swaddled cat, or you are alone and are holding the cat under your arm, gently open the cats mouth. Press gently against the jaw and then, using your thumb and forefinger pry the cat’s mouth open.
Insert the pill
Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible. Smearing some butter on it will help the pill to go down easier. Some vets suggest you fill a syringe with water and squirt a little down the cat’s throat to make it easier to swallow the pill.
Hold the cat’s mouth closed
Gently close the cat’s mouth. Hold the mouth closed and rub the cat’s neck to make sure he swallows the pill. Blowing on the cat’s nose can make him swallow.
Give cat a treat
Give your cat a treat for being so patient.
