How to recyle an old aquarium into a herb garden container
Do you have a dusty aquarium that is just taking up space in your basement? You can use this to create a very unique container for an indoor or outdoor herb garden,
All you have to do is wash out the aquarium and use glass cleaner to make the glass shiny. The black earth will show through the glass, which is a feature of a garden that you rarely see. On the top the green foliage will create contrasting color for the decor of any room in your home.
Check the tank for leaks
Fill the tank with water to make sure that there are no leaks. If you do find one, it can easily be repaired with either epoxy sealant or transparent plastic weatherproof tape. Turn this side to the back so that the repair won’t be visible when you plant your garden.
Wash the aquarium out with soapy water and rinse it out several times. Clean the outside glass with glass cleaner and buff it to a brilliant shine.
Line the bottom of the aquarium
Use gravel for an aquarium as the base. You can use the old gravel, if there was any remaining, but wash it off to clear it of any slime and chemicals. Spread a layer of gravel or stones to a height of about one inch. Place a layer of charcoal chips on this base.
Fill the aquarium with potting soil
Fill the tank with potting soil so that it comes to within 5 inches of the top. Transplant some healthy herbs into the soil. You can get these from your own garden or from a nursery.
Enjoy your herb garden
Place the aquarium herb garden where it will receive lots of sunlight. Water it regularly to keep the soil moist.
