Your writing area
You need a desk that is large enough for your computer and accessories, and you need room to print off your manuscripts. Besides a desk for your computer, you need another table where you can have letter trays handy, so you can store printer paper or other types of paper you will use for your writing.
Your writing supplies should consist of a notebook, pens, white outs, highlighters, and post-it notes. The post-it notes are for short ideas that you thought of when you started writing your book. After you write these thoughts on the post-it notes, you want to place in a specific spot in your spiral notebooks.
If you need help in thinking of an idea, there are several places where you can search for something to reveal to your readers. However, you need to have a small notebook or 3 x 5 index cards that you can carry with you, so you can write down any ideas that come to you.
By collecting ideas when they come to you, you will have something to refer to later when you’re ready to write a story. If you always carry a notebook and a pen with you, then you won’t have to rely on your memory. Sometimes, people may forget the ideas that sparked their imagination because of their daily activities. Life becomes so hectic at times, that it’s easy to forget things.
Once you have your notebook and pens or pencils, you are ready to start searching for ideas.
There are various places where you can gather ideas for short stories. (1) Family (2) Friends (3) Neighborhood (4) Television (5) Work (6) Books (7) Shopping
When you think about writing a book, you need to know the main idea, which is the theme of your book. What do you want to reveal to your readers? What is your purpose for writing your book? However, sometimes your theme doesn’t come to you until later in the book. You can also use the same theme again in another story, but with different characters, settings, and plots.
For example, you could have a student who has special needs and a teacher who has a compassionate heart for the student and wants to help him or her.
Another idea that you could use with teachers and students might be a teacher who wants to teach her students about creative writing, so she develops creative activities for them.
You can use relationships that deal with the theme of teachers and students or any other theme in different stories and with different characters and circumstances. You need to take an idea and then start developing a short story or a book.
For each novel you write, you can develop other characters with different personalities and circumstances. You can also use the relationship between two women, a man and a woman, two sisters, cousins, other friends and relatives, or any kind of relationship that comes to your mind. You could even write about a person and their pet or pets.
Have you thought about where you’d like your characters to live? A setting can be anywhere you choose. It can be a real place or a fictional place.
Developing your setting is an area where you can start to increase your creative writing skills. You can start with a realistic place, but you can add fictional settings to it by letting your creative juices flow.
You might think of the places where you’ve lived. Have you lived in the city, a small town, or in the country? You can make a list of the places where you’ve lived. Then, you need to think of a name for that place. Do you want to use the real name or a fictional name?
Your home might make a good setting for a short story. Let’s think about your house. How many rooms are in your house? What’s the outside like? Do you have a fenced-in back yard? Can you write a description of your house? Your description should include the inside and the outside. You can use that description and then add something like a secret passage or tunnels.
Write down whatever comes to you because this will help you to develop your creative writing skills.
