How to choose a good crib mattress

Tips for choosing the best mattress for your baby’s crib

Choosing a mattress for your baby’s crib is one of the first important decisions you will have to make as a new parent. It can mean that the baby will be very comfortable and will sleep through the night very early. It can also mean sleepless nights for you as you try to figure out why your baby is not sleeping as well as he/she should.

There are various types of mattresses for cribs and in various sizes. There should not be any openings between the sides of the crib and the mattress because this could be harmful for the baby. The bumper pads around the sides should also fit snugly to the mattress.

Instructions

Step 1

Get the right size of mattress for the crib

Before you purchase a crib mattress, take the measurements of the crib. The mattress should fit tightly into the crib with no open spaces around the sides. When you put the mattress in place in the crib try to insert your fingers around the sides. If you are able to fit two fingers into the space, then the mattress is too small for the crib and you need to purchase another one.

Most crib mattresses available in department stores and furniture stores are of level-1 size — 51 5/8 inches by 27 1/4 inches. Baby cribs are made to this size as well, so you shouldn’t have any difficulty with the size unless the crib is handmade.

Step 2

Which type of crib mattress is the best?

There are different types of crib mattresses and this difference is reflected in the price. The most expensive crib mattresses have inner-coil springs, while the inexpensive types are made from foam. The firmness of the mattress is the most important point that you should check first. A mattress that is too soft could be dangerous for the baby.

In order to check whether the foam mattress you choose is of high quality, you can lift the mattress. The heavier the mattress, the better quality it is because this means that the foam is denser. Squeeze the mattress to see how easily it regains its shape. This will give you some indication of the resiliency of the mattress as well as an indication of its quality.

If you decide to pay the higher price tag for an innerspring crib mattress you cannot automatically assume that it is the best one on the market. There are differences in the quality of these mattresses as well. Check for the amount of steel in the mattress rather than the number of springs. Choose one that has border rods. These will provide the support needed when the baby starts to stand in the crib and walk around.

Step 3

Check the cover on the mattress

A vinyl cover on a mattress for a baby’s crib is essential. You must be able to wash off the cover because there will be spills from milk and pampers that will ruin the mattress if it doesn’t have a waterproof cover.

There are also different types of mattress covers. Nylon covers, although they are the most expensive, are the best because they will permit the vinyl to stretch without tearing. This is especially important when the little one starts to move around in the crib.

Step 4

Check for vents around the sides of the mattress

Good quality crib mattresses have vents that allow the mattress to breathe. You will see these as tiny holes around the sides of the mattress. Some mattress brands have two large vents on each side.

As long as the mattress has vents, it doesn’t matter what kind they are. These give the mattress flexibility when a child is bouncing on it.
