How to win a karaoke contest
I was born with a passion for singing. It was Christmas day, 1995 when I got the ultimate gift. I was 15 when my parents bought me my first karaoke machine that Christmas. With this, I also received various karaoke discs, which included Bette Midler, Whitney Houston, and The Eagles, just to name a few. When I wasn’t in dance class or playing my violin, I was on the mic. This is something that hasn’t changed in the last 13 years.
At the age of 17, my friend invited me to a little chinese restaurant that did karaoke nightly. I gladly accepted her invitation, and we were off to sing. I was overwhelmed by the variety of song choices I had, and picked «You Light Up My Life». This was the first time I had sang karaoke outside of my bedroom. I brought down the house, as most would put it. Needless to say, it soon became an addiction.
Over the years, I have spent time locating every karaoke bar in my area. My husband and I quickly made friends with our favorite karaoke d.j. He informed us that he hosted contests every Monday night, and begged us to enter. The contest was divided between males and females, and there was to be one winner for each group. I won my first week with Patsy Cline’s «Walking After Midnight». My husband won with Nazareth’s «Love Hurts». The reason I won was my song choice. All of the other women sang new, up beat songs, and really not it tune. The judges were of the older generation, and took a great liking that I was a young 20 something singing good ol’ Patsy. I walked away that night with a whole $25. It wasn’t a lot, but more than what I arrived with!
At this bar, we met a woman named Faith. She let us in on a secret, one she said that she only told the best of the best. She invited us to a place almost an hour away from our home that had a karaoke contest every Saturday night, and the payout was better. We got a sitter for the kids, and made the drive the following week. It was unlike any karaoke bar I’d ever seen! There was barely elbow room, the system was amazing, and everyone was there for a good time. My husband and I entered this contest, week after week. This place became our second home with our «other» family.
It was only after finding this place that I discovered the secret to winning the contests. It comes down to song choice. If everyone around you is singing country, sing alternative or r&b, even rock. A song from a different genre will stir up the crowd, and grab the attention of the judges. Don’t sing with your eyes closed, but instead make eye contact with the crowd. Also, make good use of the stage area. If you have a cordless mic, take it out to the audience. Interaction is the way to get noticed and stand out. Last but not least, don’t take it too seriously and have fun! If you take this simple, yet effective advice, you just might find yourself in the same position my husband and I are in. To this day, we have won a grand total of a little over $2000.00 in karaoke contests. It’s easy money, and is extremely fun to do. Sing on musicians of the world, sing on.
