How to keep your friends in your late 20s and early 30s

The older we get, the harder it is to keep in touch with friends. Work and family obligations keep people extremely busy these days, and often this results in diminished friendships. However, there are ways to keep a friendship going, even when one has a full plate.

In this day and age, we have a lot of new options for keeping up with friends. Some options for keeping in touch with your friends in today’s busy world are:

1.Social networking sites: Sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, allow people to connect with their friends by sharing pictures, music, hobbies, etc. It allows users to send emails and/or leave public comments to one another.

2. Yahoo/MSN groups: These services provide the users with chat rooms, message boards, and newsletters, so one can keep in touch with friends with nothing more than a mouse, monitor, and keyboard.

3. VOIP: This tool allows users to make phone calls using a computer and microphone. It provides an easy way to contact people abroad.

4. Instant messaging: Internet search engines such as AOL, MSN, and Yahoo allow the user to have a real time conversation with a friend (or in the case of MSN, multiple friends), whether those friends are down the block or across the U.S.

There are also non-technological ways to keep your friends throughout your adult life. One suggestion is to start a book club. This provides an event and a venue for one to meet their friends, be it weekly, monthly, or something in between.

Another suggestion would be to institute a "date night" with your friends. Whether you’re single or part of a couple, whether you meet once a week or once a month, you can spend some much needed quality time with your friends without it interfering with anyone’s busy schedule.

For the truly busy people, one option for keeping your friends is to hold a conference call whenever possible. This gives everyone an opportunity to catch up with friends, even if one can’t make time in their busy schedule to meet in person. It also allows one to keep in contact with friends who live far away, and is much cheaper than the cost of an airline, train, or bus ticket to go see them.

Another option for keeping up with friends is for everyone to join a game site. Sites such as Yahoo games, AOl games, MSN games, and many others allow users to challenge each other in everything from scrabble to tic-tac-toe.

While these are all good ways to keep your friends in your life, the key to holding onto the friendships you have throughout life is communication. Contact them to let them know you’re thinking about them. Listen when they need to vent, and offer advice when it is needed. If you can, drop by their house or place of work, even if all you have time to do is give them a hug and ask them about their day. Friendships are an important part of life, and it is critical that we do whatever we can to keep good friends in our life; because good friends are not easy to come by. So when you find one, cherish the friendship for what it is. A gift from God.
