How to ping from a BlackBerry Bold 9650

Pinging is the process of sending test packets from one device on a network to another device. If information is received back from the destination device, then you know the route between the two devices is good. Pinging is a good first troubleshooting step when attempting to diagnose network connection problems. If your BlackBerry Bold 9650 smart phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can use it to ping another device or computer.

Instructions

Step 1

Go to Options

From your BlackBerry’s main screen, scroll down on the trackpad to bring up the contents of the Home folder (or press the Menu button and select Open Tray). Scroll down to the Options icon (with the picture of the wrench) and select it.

Step 2

Go to the Wi-Fi troubleshooting screen

Scroll down to Networks and Connections and select that option. Then select Wi-Fi Network. If your BlackBerry is not already connected to a Wi-Fi network, you’ll be prompted to connect now. (You won’t be able to ping if you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network.) From the Wi-Fi screen, once you are connected, press the Menu button and select Troubleshoot.

Step 3

Ping a destination device

A list of diagnostic tools will be displayed; select Ping. If you are planning to ping either your own device or your current gateway, you can select the appropriate option from the list next to «Ping Type.» Otherwise, leave the ping type as IP or Name and next to «Ping to» type in either the IP address or domain name of the destination you wish to ping.

By default, the number of pings is set to four and the frame size is set to 32 bytes, but you can change either of these values if you want. Once you have entered all of the information, press the Menu button and select Send Ping. The results of the ping will be displayed on the screen. (If you are not connected to a Wi-Fi network, the message «A network error occured» will appear.)
